Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political corruption has long been a challenge for many democratic processes, undermining the legitimacy and effectiveness of electoral systems. In Nigeria, corruption during elections manifests in various forms, including vote-buying, ballot-box stuffing, and manipulation of results. Damaturu Local Government in Yobe State has witnessed instances of political corruption that have affected the credibility of elections. This study will examine the relationship between political corruption and electoral processes in Damaturu, focusing on how corrupt practices undermine the integrity of elections and erode public trust in the political system (Ali & Lawan, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Corruption within the electoral process is a significant barrier to free and fair elections in Nigeria, particularly in local governments like Damaturu. Instances of vote-buying, manipulation of electoral outcomes, and other corrupt practices hinder the credibility of elections and reduce voter confidence. While there has been substantial attention given to electoral reform at the national level, local governments continue to be plagued by corruption. This study will assess how political corruption affects the electoral processes in Damaturu Local Government and explore the broader implications for democratic governance in Nigeria (Bala & Aminu, 2023).
